You Don't Have to Wait: Why Getting Married Now and Celebrating Later May Be the Perfect Choice

When most people picture a wedding, they imagine a beautiful venue, flowers, music, family, friends, and a celebration that lasts well into the evening. But sometimes life reminds us that what matters most isn't the venue or the reception.
It's the moment.

One of the most meaningful ceremonies I've ever officiated wasn't held in a church or on a beach. There were no rows of decorated chairs, no bridal entrance, no elaborate floral arrangements, and no reception waiting afterward.
Instead, it took place in a family's living room.
The bride's father was gravely ill. His hospital bed had been moved into the living room so he could remain surrounded by his family. He knew his time was limited, and there was only one thing he truly wanted:
To see his little girl get married.
He didn't care about the wedding dress.
He didn't care about the flowers.
He didn't care about the venue.
He simply wanted to witness one of the most important moments of his daughter's life.
So that's exactly what we did.
I came to their home, and together we performed a simple, heartfelt ceremony surrounded by the people who mattered most. Her father watched with pride as his daughter and her fiancé exchanged their vows and officially became husband and wife.
It was one of those moments that reminds you what marriage is really about.
I'll admit—it still makes me emotional just thinking about it.
The Celebration Came Later
Months later, the couple had the wedding they had always envisioned. They wore the beautiful attire. They stood before family and friends in a church. They celebrated with a reception, photographs, dancing, and everything that traditionally comes with a wedding day.
To everyone attending, it looked like their wedding day. What most guests never knew was that they had already been legally married for quite some time.
Their formal wedding became a celebration of their love rather than the day their marriage legally began.
Sadly, her father wasn't there for that celebration.
But because they chose to marry when they did, he was able to witness the moment that mattered most.
I truly believe that gift meant more than any reception ever could.
Your Wedding Doesn't Have to Follow Tradition
Many couples feel pressured to postpone getting married until every detail is perfect. But life doesn't always wait for perfect timing.
Whether you're facing:
A seriously ill family member
Military deployment
Travel challenges
Financial considerations
A destination wedding that's months away
Immigration or legal deadlines
Or simply the desire to separate the legal paperwork from the celebration
...remember that you have options.
Your marriage license makes your marriage legal.
Your celebration is exactly that—a celebration.
Those two events can happen on the same day, or they can happen weeks or even months apart. There is no rule that says they must be the same occasion.
The Day You'll Always Remember
Long after the flowers have faded and the decorations have been packed away, what you'll remember are the people who stood beside you. Sometimes the most beautiful weddings aren't the biggest ones. They're the ones filled with love, intention, and the people who matter most.
If getting legally married today means someone you love gets to witness that moment, don't let the idea of planning the "perfect wedding" keep you from creating the perfect memory.
You can always celebrate later.
But some moments only come once.
